Weekly sketch painting

For my illustrated painting of one of my past weekly sketches I chose the barbarian, and for my median I used photoshop. Overall I had a blast doing this piece, though the one  thing I really had wished I had done differently was to have been able to integrate my face into the painting. But unfortunately ran out of time to complete my idea.

Book cover final

After taking the painting into photoshop and adding the title here is the completed book cover. The type was kept simple to keep the focus on the illustration but still have a very solid feel to it and worked well with the rest of the piece.

I then went into the painting phase. From here you can see the finished painting before it was taken into photoshop. Being only my fifth painting I was very happy with how it turned out and can see the improvements especially as far as the figure goes.

Book cover comp

From the sketch I went into photoshop and built a photo reference to work from. I found the photo reference  to be extremely helpful in brining my painting to a higher level.

Book cover sketch

For my book cover I had decided to do Robinson Crusoe. After going through all my thumb nails I decided on this because I was very happy with the composition of the piece.

Week 10 Sketch

For my final week sketch I decided to go with a old school barbarian. I had and absolute blast making this guy and was able op practice my pencil sensitivity a lot in the piece and I do see the improvement on my part. one downside to the piece was I don't think I developed enough on the weapons and the face of the character. If I had would have done something different it would have been to change the weapons and face and maybe give him more of dynamic pose, but overall am pleased with my progress to this point.

Week 9 sketch

For my opposites illustration  I have to say I had a lot of fun with it. This project is one a the past couple pieces that I've tried to push the articulation with my pencil pressure  and in many ways I believe i achieved this. On the flip side I believe I could have done more contrast with and and if I had done something different it would have been that and doing something more with the background. overall this piece was good practice for me and a had fun making it so it was definitely worth the time and effort.

Week 8 sketch

This was definitely a tricky piece that I have to say I struggled with. I was happy with the over all concept and composition of the piece. Though when it came to the actual drawing I believe it fell short. If I had done something different it would have been to get better photo reference and given myself more time to work and bring the piece to a higher level.

Week 7 sketch

For my anthropomorphic portrait I really wanted to do something with a dog and a Doberman pincher seemed like the perfect choice for this almost classy portrait. one of the things I think I could have gone a little farther with was push the value scale in the piece and I think if I changed something it would have been to make the dogs head bigger and stand out more.

Urban Space Cowboy final

And this is the finished piece! overall I was extremely pleased with how the painting came out for being my forth painting so far. I thought I was able to capture the light  and had some good color unity throughout the piece. One of the things I was not overly happy with was the face, I just couldn't seem to make it look the way I wanted. If I had done something different it would have been to reproach the face but over all I love this piece and is I big accomplishment for myself.

Urban Space Cowboy sketch

I then did the drawing for the piece which I would then spray with a fixative and give a raw umber wash to more unify the whole piece.

Urban Space Cowboy Photo reference

For my Urban Space Cowboy illustration reference I took all my photos in photoshop and combined them to create this mock up for the real piece.

Week 6 sketch

For My movement Illustration I wanted to go with something that just had a fun sweet feel to it and I was very happy with how this piece came out. Unlike a lot of my other sketches it has more of a realistic feel to it which I liked. One of the downfalls I had with it was the bottom leg looks a little disproportional compared to the rest of the piece. So if I had done something different it would have been to do more with the leg and bring more contrast to the background.

Week 5 sketch

For my Mechanical Sketch i really want to do something different out side of drawing something lame like a toaster so I decided to go with this kind of robot detective.  My achievement in this piece i believe is definitely his trench coat  I had a lot of fun making this piece but the one part I think that was not as well done was the robots head and hat. Something just didn't quite turn out right with it so if I had done something different it would have been to change that up a bit.

week 4 sketch

For my inorganic subject I decided to take on something with a slightly more tricky lighting angle and for the most part i believe i achieved my goal. I was very happy with how the overall look of the piece turned out though I think i could have worked a little harder on fixing a few proportion problems with the angle of the piece and if i had done something different it would have been to focus more on the proportions and possibly adding some more objects to the piece.
